I once read that people rarely gaze at architecture, but instead, gaze through it. Homes for instance, which ultimately become a backdrop of our daily lives, are spaces to be experienced. Instead of an object, it is an event that takes us through a range of activities, emotions and thoughts.
In the design of this two-storey residence with a small library/museum for a client in Bacolod City, we kept in mind the importance of this event and experience. For this particular project we found that subtracting elements and paring down to its essence bring attention to the things that matter the most. Our client valued greens and landscaping a lot, so we created an environment that brings this to focus. It is not enough for the environment to be seen but also felt and experienced. By strategically placing openings and pockets of greens, and making the structure as porous as possible, Immediately, spaces become alive.
Aside from much needed privacy and security, enclosures give contrast, and enhance our approach to and acquaintance with openings.
Lastly, we want to build this in lightweight and insulated prefabricated panels. This way, partitions can be more flexible and open to changes in the long run, construction can be faster and easier, and spaces can be more comfortable without the use of too much energy and electricity. For our openings, we used repetitive wooden shutters that open and close according to weather and preference
