House J/A is a two-storey house with a half-basement sitting subtly on an upward sloping terrain.
One of the main qualities that the client wanted from the beginning was to really feel a sense of openness and transparency, expanding the space physically and visually while maintaining bits of nooks and enclosures for privacy and security. Surrounded by a C-shaped footprint, the inner courtyard plays a big part in achieving this connectedness between spaces, allowing both the inside and outside to be experienced as one. The building casts interesting shadows on the open court that also help protect spaces with large openings from the harsh heat of the sun.
Overall, House J/A is both subtle and striking. It's a simple and timeless design that we hope will grow and evolve with our client and their family in many years to come.
